PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Â The BIG EAST announced on Tuesday [Sept. 24] its weekly cross country awards. All-American senior
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) and junior
David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) were both named BIG EAST Athletes of the Week for their respective performances at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday, Sept. 20.

Wheeler started the race strong as she was in the lead pack of five. With a mile to go, Wheeler along with two Syracuse runners broke away. In the last 200 meters and coming around the final bend before the straight-away to the finish line, Wheeler outkicked Syracuse's Amanda Vestri to claim back-to-back victories. Wheeler finished the 5k with a time of 17:03, a near seven second improvement from last year's victory and personal best at Franklin Park. Wheeler raced against nationally ranked Dartmouth, Syracuse and Georgia Tech.

Rosas led the Friar men with a 24
th place individual finish (24:53) in the 8k race. Rosas improved eight spots from last year's race at Franklin Park. The Friar men placed 12
th out of 21 teams including nationally ranked Washington, Syracuse and Arkansas. This is Rosas' first BIG EAST weekly honor of his career.

The Providence men's cross-country team will race in the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Saturday, Oct. 12 at noon. The women will head to Wisconsin for the Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, Oct. 18 at noon.
