Men's Soccer Announces 2019 Team Captains

Griffin, Serrano and Mendonca will assume leadership roles.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -  The Providence College men's soccer program and Head Coach Craig Stewart announced the program's tri-captains for the 2019 season. Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.), Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) and Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) will lead the Friars.

Griffin, a senior midfielder, has played in 57 career games for the Friars, and has started each one. He has recorded 11 goals and two assists giving him a total of 24 points. He was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team in 2018. In 2016, he scored the game-winning goal to send the Friars to the NCAA Quarterfinals, defeating Creighton, 2-1. Griffin holds the program record for points by a freshman (15) all-time at Providence. He also was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team and the NSCAA Div. I All-Great Lakes Region Third Team.

Serrano, a redshirt senior midfielder, has played in 58 games for the Friars and totaled 5,282 minutes on the pitch. He has registered five goals and eight assists for 16 career points. In 2018, he was named to the Capitol City Classic All-Tournament Team and the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. In 2017, Serrano was ranked first on the team in assists (four) and was the named the David Kreinsen Unsung Hero at the team's banquet. In 2016, Serrano was a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team and was also named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.

Mendonca, a redshirt senior midfielder, has totaled 46 career games and 14 points. He has racked up seven goals in his three seasons with the Friars. He led the team in points (10) this past season, with five goals. He was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and Capitol City Classic All-Tournament Team. In 2016, he was named to the All-BIG EAST Freshman Team.

The trio helped the Friars to a tie for second in BIG EAST play and a semifinal appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament in 2018.
