Men’s Basketball Closes Out Regular Season With A Wire-To-Wire Win Over Butler, 83-70

Isaiah Jackson scored 20 points and freshman A.J. Reeves added 24 points connecting on six threes.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team defeated Butler in a wire-to-wire victory, 83-70, on Saturday, March 9. For the Friars, it was their regular season finale at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Providence ends the regular season with a 17-14 overall record and 7-11 BIG EAST record. The Friars will return to action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Friars' opponent is TBD for Wednesday.
The duo of Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) and A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) helped construct a 21-point lead at the break leaving Butler with a slim chance to fight back.
For the game, Reeves connected for six three-point baskets while Jackson shot a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc. Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) came up one rebound shy of a double-double, tallying 11 points and nine rebounds.
The inside presence of Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) and Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.) played a big role in the victory. Young scored seven points, grabbed eight rebounds and recorded four blocks. The team combined to outrebound Butler, 38-23.
Reeves led the Friars to a 12-5 lead in the opening five minutes. Reeves knocked down two of his three three-point attempts. The team opened 4-of-8 from the field while Kamar Baldwin kept Butler in reach with all five of its points.
Isaiah Jackson came off the bench with a hot hand for the Friars during senior night, scoring 11 straight points to build a 27-13 advantage (7:39). Jackson started 5-5 from the field and 3-3 from deep, Jackson's triple with 11:09 on the clock made him the 51st Friar in history to score 1,000 points.
Providence extended their lead to take a 48-27 advantage into the locker room. Jackson and Reeves combined for 34 points on 13-17 shooting. The duo knocked down eight treys in the opening 20 minutes. Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) locked up the paint, tallying four blocks and two steals in the first half.
The Friars gained their largest lead of the afternoon, 66-38 (13:06), on an and-one basket for Jackson with 13:06 remaining. Jackson led the fast break and fed Reeves on an alley-oop that Reeves failed to convert, Jackson grabbed the rebound and went back up for the three-point play.
Providence's ball movement was on display all afternoon. Providence assisted on 18-of-27 field goals while Butler assisted on just 7-of-26 baskets.
Providence sustained their lead for most of the second half, holding a 77-51 advantage with just 7:28 to play. Butler tried to inch their way back with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 19 just a minute later (6:22), Providence failed to connect on a field goal for the next 4:30 to allow the Bulldogs back in it. Butler trailed 79-64 with 3:46 left in the game after back-to-back threes.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit to as little as 13 with 3:13 remaining but could not complete the comeback.
Paul Jorgensen led the Bulldogs with 17 points and four rebounds.
Up next, the Friars will play in the eight-nine matchup at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y.
