PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College women's ice hockey players
Maureen Murphy (Buffalo, N.Y.),
Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) and
Avery Fransoo (North Battleford, Saskatchewan) picked up post-season honors at the Hockey East Banquet, held at the Providence Marriott on Friday, March 8. Murphy was named a Second Team All-Star for the second-consecutive season, while Myers and Fransoo earned Honorable Mention.
Murphy has had a standout sophomore campaign, playing in all 36 games. She leads the team in points (43), goals (22), assists (21), shots (187) and plus-minus (+27). She's posted 12 multi-point games this season and has only been held off the scoresheet nine times. The forward ranks fourth in Hockey East in total points and third in goals. Nationally, she's tied for fourth in short-handed goals (three) and ranks second in game-winning goals (eight).
Murphy was named Player of the Week (Nov. 19) and Player of the Month for November by Hockey East. Additionally, she was tabbed WHCA Player of the Month in November. She registered at least one point in every November contest, scoring a league-leading eight goals. Five of those goals were game winners, which helped Providence to an 8-0-0 mark in the month.
Myers, who is a first-time Hockey East post-season honoree, has been excellent in net for the Friars during her final season. The senior netminder is 23-9-2 with a 1.68 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. She's posted six shutouts and 765 total saves. Myers currently ranks fifth in the nation in goals against average and tied for third in shutouts. She is the Hockey East leader in minutes, goals against average, wins and shutouts this season.
Myers has been named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 12, Mar. 4), twice, and Goaltender of the Month (Nov. and Feb.), twice, as well. She also earned WHCA Goaltender of the Month honors after going 8-0-0, allowing one goal or less in six of the eight games.
Fransoo, who is earning her first Hockey East post-season honor, has played in all 36 of the Friars' games this season. She's posted 16 total points on one goal and 15 assists. Her 15 assists rank second on the team. The junior defenseman leads the team in blocked shots (55) and holds a +10 plus-minus. Fransoo has been tabbed the program's Unsung Hero in each of the last two seasons.
Freshman
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) was named to the Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team earlier this week (March 6). The Friars have had a representative on the All-Rookie Team in each of the last four seasons.
