Second Half Run Lifts No. 11/10 Marquette Over Providence, 76-58

Alpha Diallo scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and tallied three assists.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by No. 11/10 Marquette University, 76-58, on Saturday, Feb. 23 in the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The freshman duo of A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) and David Duke (Providence, R.I.) attempted to fuel a second half run but came up short. Reeves and Duke combined for 21 of Providence 58 points. Reeves knocked down three of the teams six three-point baskets.
 
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed six rebounds and tallied three assists.
 
Providence imposed their physicality in the early on as Duke grabbed two offensive boards in the opening possession before Diallo broke the scoreless game with a basket in the paint. Reeves extended the Friars' lead to 7-2 with his firs shot of the afternoon, knocking down a triple from the left wing. Providence doubled Marquette's shots in the opening five minutes, shooting 3-8 from the field opposed to 2-4 for the Golden Eagles.
 
Marquette scored seven-straight points to gain a 9-7 lead before Diallo knocked down his first three-point attempt from the right wing. The Golden Eagles tallied another 7-0 run to open a 16-10 advantage, Makai Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) dropped in a floater to end the run and cut the lead to 16-12 (8:39).
 
Sacar Anim led Marquette to a 25-16 advantage with 5:46 left in the half, due in part to the Golden Eagles capitalizing off Providence's six turnovers. The Friars tallied three steals compared to Marquette's one in the first 15 minutes, but the Golden Eagles recorded 10 points off turnovers compared to Providence's two.
 
The Golden Eagles brought a 31-20 lead into the locker room on 13-23 (56.5 percent) shooting. Providence shot 8-29 (27.6 percent) from the field and 2-7 (28.6 percent) from three-point range.
 
Reeves made an impact in the opening three minutes of the second half. Trailing 34-20, Reeves sunk a triple from the right corner before finishing a finger roll in transition to cut the deficit to single digits, 34-25 (17:54). Reeves scored the first seven points of the half for Providence before freshman teammate David Duke joined the action and connected on his second field goal of the afternoon. Providence trailed 40-29 (15:56) in result of Marquette opening the half 3-4 from three-point territory.
 
Every time Providence cut the lead to single digits, Marquette would respond, this time with a 12-2 run to build a 58-37 lead (10:54). Markus Howard capped off the run with a deep triple from the right wing which forced Head Coach Ed Cooley to take a timeout. Nate Watson put a stop to the run with an and-one layup over Ed Morrow.
 
Ashton-Langford attempted to lead Providence in a late second half run. Ashton-Langford connected for six-straight points from behind the arc to cut the Marquette lead 61-45. Marquette matched Providence's offensive production for the remainder of the game, taking the 76-58 win.
 
Sacar Anim and Sam Hauser paced the Golden Eagles with 18 points apiece.
 
Up next, Providence will hit the road to face Butler in Indianapolis, Ind. on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on FS1.
