Women’s Hockey Picks Up A Shutout At Holy Cross

Providence clinched home ice for the Hockey East Quarterfinals next weekend with the win.

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Providence College women's hockey team earned a 3-0 victory on Friday, Feb. 22 at Holy Cross. The Friars will have home ice for a best-of-three Quarterfinal series next weekend (March 1-3).

GAME FLOW & NOTES
- Kate Friesen (Altona, Manitoba) put the Friars up 1-0 with 10:32 remaining in the first period. Neve Van Pelt (Mitchell, Ontario) and Emily Landry (Orangeville, Ontario) set up the play, which ended with Friesen knocking the puck in during a scramble.
- Friesen's goal was her sixth of the season. Van Pelt earned her fourth assist, while Landry picked up her sixth.
- The Friars killed off two penalties in the opening period to head to the locker room with a one-goal lead.
- The second period featured back-and-forth action with Providence outshooting Holy Cross, 16-8.
- The Friars had two power plays in the middle frame, racking up six shots on goal during the four minutes. Despite the offensive pressure, Providence was unable to extend its lead.
- Avery Fransoo (North Battleford, Saskatchewan) wasted no time getting the Friars on top by two in the third. She scored her first goal of the season 37 seconds into the period.
- Maureen Murphy (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ontario) assisted the goal that made it 2-0.
- Murphy's assist was her 20th of the season and Putigna's was her 13th.
- Putigna added a second point in the game, scoring her 12th goal of the season at 9:41 of the third. Her and Meaghan Rickard (Coventry, R.I.) skated in on a 2-on-1, which ended with Putigna scoring five-hole.
- Rickard's assist was her 12th of the season and extends her point streak to a season-long five games.
- Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) made 28 saves in her fifth shutout of the season. Jada Brenon made 31 saves at the other end for Holy Cross.
- Providence's penalty kill was strong, finishing the day 4-for-4.
- The Friars outshot the Crusaders 34 to 28 in the game.
