Women’s Soccer Hosts Annual End Of Year Banquet

2/20/2019 1:17:00 PM | Women's Soccer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team held its annual banquet on Jan. 26 at the Courtyard Marriott in Providence, R.I. Seniors Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.), Hailee Duserick (Canton, Mass.), Casey Estey (Kensington, N.H.), Eva Gourdeau (Beverly, Mass.) and Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.) were celebrated for their contributions to the program.

The program welcomed honorary guest speaker and program alumna Meg Sweeney ('16) to reflect on her experience as a program member. Sweeney, originally from Coral Springs, Florida, was a goalkeeper from 2012-2015. Wearing the number 00, she played in goal in 13 games throughout her career. During the 2015 postseason BIG EAST Tournament run, Sweeney stepped up in goal during the PK shootout in the semifinals against Georgetown where she saved two of four penalty kicks, leading the Friars to the tournament final against Butler. As a member of the class of 2016, Meg graduated alongside 11 of her teammates, five of whom were in attendance at the banquet, with a B.S. in Finance and a minor in Accountancy. Currently, Meg lives in New York City while working downtown for Capital One.

The team celebrated five players earning All-BIG EAST awards. Day represented Providence on the All-BIG EAST First Team while Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.), Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.), and Steeves were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Hannah Morgan (Berwyn, Pa.) earned All-Freshman Team recognition. Day scored the game-winning goal against Marquette (Oct. 7) and also helped the defensive unit to 10 shutouts. McNulty scored 10 goals on the season, ranking third in the BIG EAST. She also added three assists to rank her fourth in the BIG EAST in points (23). She scored four game-winning goals for the Friars and tallied three multi-goal games. Her average of 4.20 shots per game ranked her 26th in the NCAA. Steeves scored two goals on the season with three assists. Hogan tied the program record for shutouts in a season. She recorded her 10th shutout against St. John's in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal. Hogan ranked 20th in the nation in save percentage (.856) and eighth in the nation in shutouts with 10. Morgan played a significant role in those shutouts, stabilizing the backline with Duserick.

In addition, the team announced its annual program awards. The 'We Not Me' Award was presented to Melissa Bambery (Acton, Mass.) and Day. The award recognizes members of the program who challenge themselves to become better individually but keeps the team the priority. Bambery and Day committed to developing the "me" for the greater good of the "we," regardless of personal stats or individual satisfaction.

The 'Maximize Today Award' was presented to a member of the program who has excelled both academically and athletically. The student-athlete influenced the success on the field with her performance and also flourished as a student in the classroom. Day was awarded with this honor alongside the 'We Not Me' award.

McNulty was awarded with the 'Process Award,' awarded to a member of the program who has shown significant improvement. McNulty strived on a daily basis to embrace the process of developing and mastering her ability as a member of the program.

The Friars concluded the 2018 season 11-6-3 (4-3-2) and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. The program has achieved 11 winning seasons in its 35-year history and Head Coach Sam Lopes has produced a winning season in each of his four seasons with the program.
