Tiago Mendonca scored his second goal of the NCAA Tournament to tie the game at 1-1 prior to halftime.
CLEMSON, S.C. – The Providence College men's soccer team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament after falling to the No. 2 seed Clemson Tigers, 2-1, in double overtime on Sunday, Dec. 1 in the Third Round. This marks Providence's first loss in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament after advancing to the Quarterfinal round in 2014 and 2016. Clemson was rewarded with a penalty kick in the 105th minute that Robbie Robinson converted for the golden goal victory. Providence tied the program record this season with 16 total wins. The Friars now hold an 11-8-1 all-time record in NCAA Tournament action and 8-4-1 mark under Head Coach Craig Stewart.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
-Providence saw the first real opportunity of the match in the fourth minute. Christopher Roman (Glastonbury, Conn.) played a ball from the right side of the field to Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.) right outside the six-yard box, Davock put his shot just inches away from the left post.
- Clemson gained a 1-0 advantage just five minutes later, Robbie Robinson brought the ball through the back line that he finished with the outside of his right foot to the bottom right corner.
- Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) evened the match at 1-1 with just 10 seconds remaining in the first half. Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) brought the ball up the entire field on the counter-attack after an opposing corner kick, Griffin slid the ball to Mendonca who cut back at the right corner of the eighteen and slotted his shot in the bottom left corner. The goal marked Mendonca's second of the NCAA Tournament and his fourth of the season.
- Providence led after the opening 45 minutes in shots, 6-4.
- Providence and Clemson each traded a goal scoring opportunity in the second half. In the 59th minute, Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) turned away Clemson's bid on a shot from just outside the six-yard box. Griffin ripped a shot in the 84th minute that was heading for the top left corner of the net, but the Clemson keeper got his fingertips on it with a diving save.
- The Friars nearly ended the game in the first overtime period in the 94th minute. Davock played a ball across to Griffin on the end line who couldn't connect while sliding into the net.
- Clemson was rewarded a penalty kick in the 105th minute. Robbie Robinson scored his second goal of the match for the golden goal victory.
- Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) earned three saves on the night.
