PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) of the Providence College men's soccer team was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Friday, Nov. 8.
Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this season.
Serrano helped the Friars record a 2-0 shutout against No. 8 St. John's on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The redshirt senior led a defense that held the Red Storm to just nine shots, three on goal. He also tallied an assist on
Paulo Lima's (Lisbon, Portugal) goal in the 50
th minute. Serrano previously was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times this season.
Aviza earned his seventh shutout of the season on the Friars 2-0 win over eighth-ranked St. John's. The keeper saved the three shots on goal that the Red Storm had in the match. This was the Friars' ninth shutout of the season. Aviza was previously named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 23.
Providence locked in the No. 3 seed and is hosting the First Round of the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship where they will taking on No. 6 Marquette. The game is set for kick-off tomorrow, Nov. 9 at 12:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
