BRONX, N.Y.- The Providence College men's and women's cross country-teams claimed ECAC/IC4A Championships in their respective races on Saturday Nov. 23 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The men finished first (37 points) among 15 teams and the women finished first (39 points) out of 18 teams.
Leading the pack for the Friar men was
Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.). Gallagher was in the lead pack with three other runners and a strong push in the final 1000 meters gave him a third-place finish (25:03).
Peter Rindfuss (Hamburg, N.Y.),
Michael O'Leary (St. James, N.Y.),
David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) and
Sean Meehan (East Greenwich, R.I.) were all in the chase pack at the mile marker. The four Friars worked together through the field to all finish in the top 12. Rounding out the top five was Rindfuss in seventh (25:25), O'Leary in eighth (25:29), Rosas in 11
th(25:39) and Meehan in 12
th (25:40).
On the women's side,
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.),
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) and
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) broke away from the group at the gun. The trio of Friars held an eight second lead after one mile. The three All-BIG EAST runners crossed the line with Wheeler first (17:29), Coffin second (17:34) and Tuck third (18:01). This was Wheeler's third victory of the season (UNH Tri Meet, Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown). Rounding out the top five for the Friar women were
Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand) and
Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland). Hunt moved through the field very well and rallied in the last mile to pass five women to finish in 11
th (18:33). O'Connor finished strong with a 24
th-place finish (18:55).
