Dove’s Late Goal Lifts Women’s Hockey Over Merrimack, 2-1

All three of the game’s goals came in the final nine minutes of play.

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the Merrimack Warriors, 2-1, on Friday, Nov. 22 at Lawler Rink. Bailey Burton (Bloomington, Minn.) and Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) scored in the final nine minutes to help the Friars earn the victory.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
- Providence and Merrimack battled through a scoreless first period. The Friars held a 23-11 advantage in total shots and had three power play opportunities.
- The Warriors' stood strong on the penalty kill, only allowing three Friar shots though to goaltender Emma Gorski during the six minutes of penalty kill time.
- The Friars held a slight advantage in shots on goal through the second period (10-9). Each team had one power play chance through the middle stanza.
- After over 50 minutes of scoreless play, the game's three goals came quickly.
- Bailey Burton broke the stalemate at 11:21 of the third. She skated into the slot and fired a wrist shot through a defender's screen that beat Gorski blocker side. Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) and Ariane Julien (Saint Hyacinthe, Quebec) assisted Burton's fourth goal of the year.
- Merrimack responded quickly, tying the game just 3:08 later. Mack Emery notched her first collegiate goal for the Warriors.
- With under three minutes remaining, the Friars regained the lead off a face-off play. Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) drew the puck back to Avery Fransoo (North Battleford, Saskatchewan) who slid it over to Dove for a one-timer. The goal was Dove's third of the season and gives her a team-leading 12 points.
- Providence outshot Merrimack 12-2 in the final period and 33-17 for the game.
