PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College men's soccer team made its season debut in the United Soccer Coaches' Top-25 on Nov. 19 with a No. 21 ranking. The Friars were receiving votes last week, but a runner-up finish in the BIG EAST Conference Championship helped pave the way to a spot in the poll.
Providence College earned an at-large berth to the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship and owns a 14-6 overall record. The Friars won six of their last seven regular-season games, capped by a 2-0 victory of then-No. 8 St. John's in the regular-season finale on Nov. 6.
The Friars finished third in the BIG EAST regular-season standings and went on to defeat Marquette (3-0) in the BIG EAST First Round, followed by a 2-1 victory in the BIG EAST Semifinals at then-No. 14 St. John's in Queens, N.Y.
Providence took a six-game win streak into Washington, D.C. for a match-up against No. 3 Georgetown in the BIG EAST Championship game, where it fell to the Hoyas, 3-1 on Nov. 17.
The Friars are making their ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history, including the fourth under the direction of Head Coach
Craig Stewart. Providence's last appearance came in 2016, when it advanced to the Quarterfinals against North Carolina. The Friars fell to the Tar Heels, 1-0, in double-overtime.
Providence's most notable run in the tournament came in 2014, as the Friars advanced to their first College Cup in program history. The squad fell to UCLA in the semifinals, 3-2, in overtime.
The Friars return to action on Thursday, Nov. 21 in the NCAA First Round against NJIT. Opening kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. Tickets are available by calling the Providence College Ticket Office (401) 865-GOPC or online by visiting Friars.com.
