Men’s Soccer To Host NJIT In NCAA First Round

This is the Friars' tenth appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's soccer team earned an at-large selection to the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. The Friars will host New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in the First Round on Thursday, Nov. 21. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.

The Friars are making their 10th appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament, and fourth under the direction of eighth-year Head Coach Craig Stewart. The Friars' last appearance was in 2016 and the team advanced to the Quarterfinals. The Friars' most notable run in the NCAA's came during the 2014 campaign, when the squad advanced to the College Cup Semifinal. Providence is 9-7-1 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, including a 6-3-1 mark with Stewart at the helm.

Providence enters the NCAA Tournament with a 14-6 overall record. The team finished third (6-3-0) in the BIG EAST Conference final standings. Providence College recently fell to top-seed and third-ranked Georgetown in the BIG EAST Championship Game, 3-1, on Nov. 17 in Washington, D.C. It marked the fifth time in program history that the program advanced to the final game of the BIG EAST Championship.

NJIT enters Thursday's NCAA First Round with a 10-4-4 overall record and earned an automatic bid to the tournament after capturing the program's first ASUN Tournament Championship on Nov. 16, earning a 2-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast University in the final. NJIT captured the regular season title with a 5-1 conference mark.

Tickets will be available for sale at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19 through the Providence College Ticket Office. Fans can purchase tickets on line via Friars.com or by calling (401) 865-GOPC.

The winner of the match-up between Providence College and NJIT will face No. 15 seed Big Ten foe Penn State (12-3-3, 6-1-1 second place) on Sunday, Nov. 24 in University Park, Pa.
