Five Men’s Soccer Players Earn All-BIG EAST Recognition

Aviza, Griffin, Lima, Mendonca and Serrano were the honorees.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Five Providence College men's soccer players earned All-BIG EAST honors heading into the BIG EAST Semifinals. The conference released its post-season awards on Nov. 11. Redshirt seniors Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) and Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) earned First Team recognition, while sophomore Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) picked up Second Team honors. Seniors Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) and Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) were named to the Third Team.
 
Mendonca started all 18 games for the Friars this season and logged 1,459 minutes in the midfield. He's recorded six points on the season with one goal and four assists. He is tied for first on the team in shots taken (43). This is the redshirt senior's fourth-career league honor, as he was selected to the Preseason All- BIG EAST Team (2019), the All-BIG EAST First Team (2018) and the All-BIG EAST Freshman Team (2015).
 
Serrano started all 18 games for the Friars this season in the backline. The redshirt senior is tied for the team lead in points with 15. He leads the squad in assists (seven) and has scored four goals, which are both career highs. The defender has logged 1,601 minutes, playing the entire game except for one. In the conference he is tied for first in assists this season. During the season he was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 8) and to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times. This is Serrano's third year of league recognition, as he was a BIG EAST All-Tournament Team selection (2016 and 2018) and a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team (2016).
 
Lima has started every game for the Friars this season after not playing a game in his freshman season. The sophomore has logged 1,543 in the midfield. He has scored a career-high of 15 points this season, which is tied for first on the team. He leads the team in goals (seven), has registered one assist, and has taken 36 shots. The Friars have won their last five games, with Lima scoring a goal in each one. During the season, he scored the golden goal to give Providence the 3-2 win over Creighton (Oct. 26) to pick up crucial points in league play. Lima was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice over the season.
 
Aviza, the Friars' starting goalkeeper for the past season, started all 18 games in net. He has logged 1,593 minutes and tallied eight individual shutouts and two shared shutouts to give the team 10 overall. His most recent was in the win over Marquette (3-0) in the BIG EAST First Round on Nov. 9. Overall, Aviza holds a 0.85 goals against average and a .717 save percentage. During the season, he was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice.
 
Griffin has been a consistent player in the midfield for the Friars in his four years. He has started every game for Providence over the four seasons. This season he has scored two goals and tallied one assist to give him five points on the season. This is Griffin's third year receiving league recognition, as he was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team in 2018 and was a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2016.
 
The third-seeded Friars head to No. 2 St. John's on Wednesday, Nov. 13 for the BIG EAST Tournament. The Semifinal game will kick-off at 6:00 p.m. at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y. The game will be aired on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The winner of Wednesday's match will advance to the Finals on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 12:00 p.m.
