PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The BIG EAST announced today [Oct.22] its weekly cross-country awards.
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week after her 26
th place finish (20:28.1) against a deep field at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, Oct. 18. The Friars ran against 17 nationally-ranked teams, including No. 1 Arkansas, tied-No. 4 New Mexico, tied-No. 4. Stanford, No. 6 Utah, No. 9 North Carolina State and No. 10 Michigan State.
With such a deep field, Wheeler got out well and positioned herself within the lead group. The lead pack of 10 made a decisive move at 3,000 meters. The senior crossed the line in 26
th place with a time of 20:28.1. Wheeler improved 11 spots from a 37
th place finish last year.
The Friar women head to Kenosha, Wis. on Saturday, Nov. 2 for the BIG EAST Championships at 11:00 a.m. ET.
