NEW ORLEANS, LA. –The USTFCCCA announced its weekly cross-country awards on Monday, Sept. 24. Junior
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) was named NCAA XC Division I National Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday, Sept. 21.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected by the USTFCCCA at the beginning of each week and awarded to ten collegiate cross-country athletes. The award highlights not only the best times, but also performances that were significant on the national level.
Wheeler ran to the individual title at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown. She led right from the gun and never looked back. Wheeler was ahead by as many as 16 seconds at the two-mile split and won by nine seconds over the second and third place finishers.
Wheeler is only the second Friar in cross-country program history since this award was started in 2014, to receive this honor.
The Providence College women's cross-country team will travel to Madison, Wis. to race in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, Sept. 28 at 1:20 P.M. (ET).
