PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College and University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey programs are excited to announce the second annual Relive the Rivalry Challenge.
The fundraising campaign seeks to capitalize on the rivalry and longtime comradery between the women's hockey programs at Providence and UNH. The concept of the alumni giving challenge was conceived in 2017-18 as a way to recognize the history of each program's commitment to the sport of women's ice hockey, as well as a tribute to the storied rivalry between each program.

The Rivalry
Both UNH and Providence were among the first in the nation to field a women's collegiate hockey team. For decades, the two programs were at the top echelon of the sport and were heated rivals on the ice.
The Wildcats and the Friars have met 155 times in their history, dating all the way back to 1977. From 1985 to 1999, every ECAC women's championship game featured Providence, New Hampshire, or both. The two teams met nine times in ECAC tournament play, including six championship games. One such game was the longest women's hockey game ever played. It took five overtimes in March of 1996 before UNH finally prevailed, 3-2. The rivalry spilled over into the formation of the Women's Hockey East Association, seeing six playoff matchups including four UNH-Providence Hockey East Championship games.
