PROVIDENCE, R.I – The Providence College men's basketball team used a second half surge (50 points) to defeat the University at Albany, 73-43, Tuesday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. This marked the Friars' last non-conference home game of the season as they wrap up non-conference play at Texas on Friday, Dec. 21. Providence will open BIG EAST play against Creighton on Dec. 31 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Albany's 43 points marks the first time Providence held a team under 49 points since 2016 against St. Francis (48).
Junior Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) earned his second-consecutive start in place of the injured A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass). He picked up right where he left off from his career-high 18 points Sunday night against Central Connecticut. The Albany defender went under a screen as he knocked down a three from the right wing at the 15:55 mark to get his night going.
White's final line included 16 points, four assists and three rebounds. He shot 3-5 from three-point territory to lead the team in threes. Alpha Diallo scored a game-high 20 points and tallied his first double-double since he recorded three in a row to start the season. Diallo corralled 10 rebounds and added three steals.
The Friars gave up three offensive rebounds in the opening minutes, resulting in an 8-5 deficit before Head Coach Ed Cooley called to his bench with Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.), Makai Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) and Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.). Providence struggled to convert early, shooting just 3-15 from the field heading into the second media timeout of the half (11:40), they trailed 13-8.
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) scored a team-high five points in the half. He got the Friars on the board with an offensive rebound in traffic that he went up and finished over the top. He then ignited the team with an and-one layup that he finished with his left hand, he cut the deficit to 13-11 after the free throw.
Providence reached the bonus at 10:54 in the first half but only shot eight free throws in the first 20 minutes compared to Albany's four. The Friars trailed 18-17 with 3:45 left in the half. Drew Edwards (Perry Hall, Md.) scored his first points of the season by knocking down two free throws at the 2:16 mark to give Providence a 19-18 lead.
Providence took a 23-20 lead into the locker room after an Ashton-Langford three and free throw from White. The Great Danes outrebounded the Friars 22-19 in the half, both teams shot 3-10 from three-point territory.
White and Watson got the Friar offense moving in the second half, in the first 2:29 they used a 9-0 run to take a 32-20 lead. Watson began the half with a basket and the foul, followed by two treys from White. Providence shot a perfect 5-5 from the field, including 2-2 from three-point range to open the half.
Alpha Diallo helped the Friars pull away at the 14:00 minute mark. He knocked down a corner three followed by a breakaway dunk after Ashton-Langford pushed the ball up the court in transition. Providence outscored Albany 22-5 to open the half and give them a 45-25 lead with 13:43 to play.
The Great Danes could not pull the game within less than 20 points for the rest of the contest.
The Friars accumulated 18 points off 22 turnovers, with 13 of them coming in the second half which led to their second half surge. They shot 60.7 percent from the field in the second half compared to 24.1 percent in the first half.
Adam Lulka and Ahmad Clark led the Great Danes with eight points apiece.
Up next, Providence will travel to Austin, Texas to take on the Texas Longhorns on Friday, Dec. 21 at 9 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and can be heard on the radio at WPRO (630AM/99.7FM).
