PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The USTFCCCA announced its weekly cross-country awards on Monday, Oct. 22. Junior
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) was named NCAA XC Division I National Athlete of the Week for her performance at the CCSU Mini Meet in New Britain, Conn. on Friday, Oct. 19. This marks the second time this season that Wheeler has received the NCAA XC Division I National Athlete of the Week award.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected by the USTFCCCA at the beginning of each week and awarded to ten collegiate cross-country athletes. The award highlights not only the best times, but also performances that were significant on the national level.
Wheeler crossed the line second overall in a time of 9:48.9 and posted the fasted time by a non-redshirt collegian at the CCSU Mini Meet in the past six years. Wheeler finished 19 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
This is the third time this season that Wheeler was the top collegian at a race. Wheeler won the UNH Dual Meet, Coast-To-Coast Battle in Beantown and then this past weekend the CCSU Mini Meet.
The Providence College women's cross-country team will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete in the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 11:00 a.m. (ET).
