PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the University of Bridgeport, 96-57, on Friday, Oct. 19 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. It was the Friars' first of two exhibition games this season.
The Friars were led by junior guard
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) who started 3-3 from the field, two of which were three-pointers. Diallo scored 12 points, brought down 9 rebounds, and shot 4-for-7 from the field for the game.
Sophomore
Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.) was a force on the block all game, totaling eight rebounds and adding 15 points in 17 minutes.
The Friars struggled to break the press early in the half but started to break through once they settled in. Sophomore Makai Asthon-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) used their speed and vision to create open shots around the arc. The pressure put on the defense led to Providence reaching the bonus with 9:53 left to play in the half.
After 20 minutes of action, the Friars held a 40-29 lead, finishing the last 3:05 on an 8-0 run. Providence used their size early, outrebounding the Purple Knights, 30-11, including 10 offensive rebounds in the first half.
Diallo, Watson, and
Jimmy Nichols, Jr. (Conway, S.C.) combined for nine of the 10 offensive rebounds, helping the Friars to seven second chance points.
In the second half Providence started to pull away, outscoring the Purple Knights 16-6 to start the half.
A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) contributed seven points in the first five minutes, finishing the game with 13 points. Providence shot 58.6 percent from the field in the second half.
Providence led 66-46 with 10:09 left to play before completing a 17-0 run capped off by an alley-oop dunk by senior
Emmitt Holt (Rochester, N.Y.), assisted by Reeves.
All game long the Friars looked to control the paint as they outrebounded Bridgeport, 62-23.
Dennis Green led the way for the Purple Knights scoring 21 points in 19 minutes.
Providence will play one more exhibition game against Bowie State on Oct. 27. The Friars will then open their regular season, hosting Siena on Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m. on FSN.
