PROVIDENCE R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team is set to continue its BIG EAST schedule with matches against Butler University and Xavier University. Providence will take on Butler on Sept. 30 at 6:00 p.m and Xavier on Oct. 1 at 4:00 p.m. There will be live stats and live stream for both matches. SCOUTING PROVIDENCE: Providence has a 12-6 (0-2) record to this point in the season. The Friars are coming off losses against DePaul and Marquette. The Friars success has come from senior experience and underclassmen talent.
The Friars' attack is being led by mainly underclassmen. Sophomore Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) is leading Providence with 183 kills (3.00 kps). Sophomore Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.), freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) and senior Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) have all been strong as well recording 149 (2.40 kps), 129 (2.12 kps) and 125 (1.95 kps) kills, respectively. Freshman Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) has been solid as of late as well, recording 87 kills (2.42 kps) in only 36 sets played. Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) has set the Friars attack all season, recording 640 assists (9.85 aps).
Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) has been the leader of the Friars' defensive efforts as she averages 5.03 digs per set. Cruz is number two in the NCAA for total digs with 342. Onyundo, Clark and Fitzgerald have also been essential defensively, tallying 153, 150 and 136 digs, respectively. Impellizeri has been a force on the front line tallying 72 blocks (1.16 bps) this season.
SCOUTING BUTLER: The Butler University Bulldogs have begun 12-6 (1-1). Most recently the Bulldogs are 1-2 over their last three matches, including a win against St. John's and a loss against Seton Hall.
Butler's attack has relied heavily upon Anna Logan. Logan has 318 kills (4.54 kps) to this point in the season. Whitney Beck and Brook Gregory have also been strong for the Bulldogs, tallying 166 (2.41 kps) and 145 (2.07) kills, respectively. Setting the attack for Butler has been Makayla Ferguson. Ferguson has totaled 640 assists (9.85 aps) thus far.
Taylor Takeda has led the defensive efforts for the Bulldogs. Through 18 matches, Takeda has recorded 268 digs (3.83 dps). Logan has also been strong defensively, totaling 173 digs (2.47 dps).
SCOUTING XAVIER: The Xavier Musketeers have a 7-8 record to this point in the season including a 1-1 record in the BIG EAST. The Musketeer's attack is being led by Abbey Bessler, who has tallied 216 kills (3.79 kps). Kristen Massa and Sofia Peterson have also been solid, recording 152 and 151 kills, respectively. The Musketeers have used both Mackenzi Humm and McKena Estes to set the attack. Humm has totaled 350 assists (5.93 aps) while Estes has tallied 312 (5.29 aps) this season.
Meredith Klare has led the defensive efforts for Xavier with 228 digs (3.86 dps). Alexis Newsome has been strong on the front line, totaling 71 blocks (1.20 bps).
