SAN JOSE, CALIF. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped its season opener to San Jose State, 3-0, on Friday, Aug. 26 in San Jose, Calif. Providence fell in the first set, 25-18, and lost the second set, 25-19. San Jose State closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in the third set.
The Friars were led offensively by sophomores Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) and Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.), who each recorded seven kills. Freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) proved to be the most efficient Friar on offense with six kills on eight total attacks for a team-best .500 hitting percentage.
Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) assumed the starting role as setter for Providence and recorded 19 assists to go along with eight digs and one service ace. Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) and Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) each tallied 10 digs defensively.
Avery Summer led San Jose State with eight kills, while Thelma Gretarsdottir and Latahevai Lousi contributed seven kills each. Luiza Andrade joined the Friars' duo of Cruz and Fitzgerald with a match-high 10 digs. Breann Robinson led SJSU with 15 set assists.
Providence will complete play at the San Jose State Tournament with a pair of matches against Manhattan and UMass Lowell on Saturday, Aug. 27. The Friars will take on the Jaspers at 2:00 p.m. ET, followed by a show-down with the River Hawks at 7:00 p.m. ET.
