PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence Friars women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Friday night, March 18 at Centre Court in Riverside, RI. The Friars held a 3-2 lead with two matches remaining, but the Pioneers were able to pull out the second and third singles matches in 3-sets to seal the victory.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking the first and second doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Senior Hannah Zangari and sophomore Nicole Cyterski battled back from a 2-1 deficit in the third doubles match to capture a 6-4 victory.

The Pioneers would up their advantage to 2-0 when Katie DeRienzo earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Providence's Alana Prinos out of first singles. However, the Friars' depth was put on display next, as Amanda Pitocco, Risa Takenaka, and Brooke Burnside earned wins out of fourth, fifth, and sixth singles respectively to give the Friars a 3-2 lead. Pitocco used a brilliant combination of high topspin groundstrokes and sliced dropshots to dispatch Taylor Gurda by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Takenaka weathered a tight first set and dominated play in the second set with her speed and strong groundstrokes to earn a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lindsey Post. Finally, Burnside's punishing groundstrokes allowed her to grab a hard earned 6-3, 6-3 win against Clauida Ruiz.

It was the Pioneers who would take the only two 3-set matches of the day in order to avenge their loss to the Friars during the 2014-2015 season.

The Friars return to action this Tuesday, March 22 against the Bryant Bulldogs in Smithfield, RI.
