The Providence College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (17-25, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25) decision against Xavier in a BIG EAST Conference contest on Nov. 4. With the setback Providence falls to 13-16 overall and 1-12 in the BIG EAST while Xavier improves to 15-11 on the year with a 10-4 mark in league play.
The first set had back and forth action early with the set tied 7-7. Xavier then used a 7-2 run, capped by a kill from junior outside hitter Kristen Massa for the 16-9 advantage. The visiting Musketeers then cruised to the 25-17 win in the set for the 1-0 lead in the match. Massa registered three kills and two digs in the set while senior right side hitter Sofia Peterson had four kills for Xavier. The Musketeers had a .265 hitting percentage (13 kills, 4 errors, 34 attempts). Providence freshman Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) paced the Friars with four kills and a block while junior setter Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had nine assists and two digs in the set.
Providence came out strong to open the second set and took the 8-4 lead on a block assist from sophomore middle blocker Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) and Clark to force a timeout by Xavier. The visiting Musketeers responded, however, and came back to tie the set 20-20 on a kill by Peterson. Xavier then took control for the remainder of the set, closing it on a kill by Massa to take the 25-22 win and extend the lead to 2-0 in the match. Peterson tallied five kills while junior setter Mackenzi Humm notched nine assists and four digs in the set for Xavier. Senior outside hitter Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) led the way for PC with four kills and a block while Clark notched 13 assists in the set for the Friars.
The third set had PC again take the early 5-3 before Xavier went on a 7-1 run and capitalized on a Friar hitting error to take the 10-6 advantage and force a Providence timeout. The Friars rallied in the set and tie the set 17-17 on a Xavier hitting error. PC held a 22-20 lead after a service ace by Clark and took the third set by a score of 25-23 on a kill by freshman outside hitter Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) to make the match 2-1. Veverka led the way for the Friars in the set, recording six kills with one dig and one block. Massa and senior outside hitter Abbey Bessler each had four kills in the third set for Xavier with sophomore libero Meredith Klare posting six digs for the Musketeers.
Providence carried the momentum into the fourth set and used a Xavier ball handling error to take the early 7-4 lead. Xavier then used a 14-5 run, capped by a service ace from Klare to take the 18-12 advantage. The Musketeers then cruised to the 25-19 win in the set and the 3-1 match victory for Xavier. Bessler notched five kills in the set for Xavier while Impellizeri and Alderson each notched three kills for PC.
Bessler led the way for Xavier with a match-high 14 kills and nine digs while Peterson and Massa each notched 12 kills in the win for the Musketeers. Humm recorded a double-double with 35 assists and 13 digs while Klare notched 21 digs in the victory.
Alderson paced the Providence attack with 13 kills. Veverka and Fitzgerald also had strong matches, tallying 12 and nine kills respectively. Clark had a double-double with 42 assists and 13 digs in the setback for the Friars. Defensively, the Friars were led by Michelle Cruz (Midlands Park, N.J.) who tallied 21 digs.
In upcoming action, PC will host Butler on Sunday, November 6 at 1:00 p.m. while Xavier travels to Creighton on Sunday, November 6 at 1:00 p.m.
