The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the Memphis Tigers, 60-51, on Friday, November 25, 2016 in Destin, Fla. in the third round of the Emerald Coast Classic. The Friars move 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Tourney. Providence will play No. 7/6 Virginia at 7 p.m. ET in the championship game of the Emerald Coast Classic on Saturday on CBS Sports Network.
Junior Emmitt Holt (Webster, N.Y.) put the Friars on the board in the opening minutes of play. After trailing by as many as 12 points during the first frame, the Friars closed the gap in the final minute of play to just one point (30-29).
During the first half the Tigers led for 18:13 with the greatest lead at 12 points with 4:27 minutes remaining. The Friars concluded the opening frame shooting 10-of-29 from the field. The team was led by Holt and Kyron Cartwright (Compton, Calif.) with eight points each. Memphis was 12-of-31 from the field and was led by Dedric Lawson on nine points.
Freshman Kalif Young (Vaughn, Ontario) lifted the Friars to their first lead of the game with a dunk in the 11th minute of the second half, 37-36.
The Friars and Tigers traded baskets throughout the second period, with five lead changes. The Tigers led for a total of 28:05 minutes to the Friars 9:44. Junior Rodney Bullock (Hampton, Va.) led the Friars on 18 points, including 12 in the second half. Holt recorded a double-double on 16 points and 10 rebounds. For the game, the Friars shot 40% from the field to the Tigers 34.5%. Dedric Lawson led Memphis on 19 points.
