PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team fell to Villanova, 3-1, in BIG EAST Conference action on Nov. 18 in Providence, R.I. Villanova improved to 18-12 overall on the year (9-8 BIG EAST), while the Friars dropped to 13-20 (1-16 BIG EAST).

The Friars started the first set with five-straight points and raced out to a 22-13 lead. The Wildcats went on to score the next eight points to get within 22-21. Villanova committed a service error to give the Friars a 23-21 lead, but responded with four-straight points to close out the set (25-23). Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) led Providence with three kills on six total attacks (.500).

In the second set, the Friars trailed 7-4 before rattling off seven-consecutive points to take an 11-7 lead. Villanova battled back to tie the match, 14-14, but the Friars reeled off six unanswered points to gain a 20-14 advantage. The Friars maintained control to take a 25-21 victory and tie the match, 1-1. Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the charge for Providence with six kills.

The third set was tied 9-9 before the Wildcats won six of the next seven points to take a 15-10 lead. Providence got within two points (24-22), but Villanova was able to hold off a late rally. Veverka registered a team-high four kills in the set. With the victory, the Wildcats took a 2-1 edge in the match.

Villanova held a 12-7 lead in the fourth set before the Friars closed to within two (13-11). The Wildcats thwarted the threat with four-consecutive points to take a 17-11 lead and force a Providence timeout. Villanova won the match with a 25-18 victory in the set. Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) led Providence with four kills.

Veverka and Alderson led the Friars with 12 kills each in the match, overall. Fitzgerald checked in with 11 kills. Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) posted 37 of the Friars' 43 assists in the match, while Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) collected 23 digs.

The Friars conclude their season on Sunday, Nov. 20 against BIG EAST foe Georgetown. The match will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Friars will honor their senior class in a ceremony prior to the match.
