WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Providence College field hockey team willed its way to a, 3-2, overtime victory against BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Friday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Despite a hefty advantage in shots (27-8) and penalty corners (18-5), the Friars needed extra time to seal the win. Providence improves to 11-3 overall (4-1 BIG EAST), while Georgetown drops to 4-10 (0-5 BIG EAST).
The Hoyas got on the scoreboard first as they recorded three-consecutive penalty corners before finding the back of the cage at the 8:53 mark. Devin Holmes was credited with the goal as she converted a direct shot from the top of the circle, assisted by Molly Thompson and Megan Parsons. The Hoyas held the Friars scoreless the remainder of the half and took their 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Hoyas' defense held off a furious attack by the Friars until freshman defender Floor Rozemeijer (Santpoort-Zuid, Holland) broke through at 57:54 to tie the game, 1-1. It marked Rozemeijer's third goal of the season, and was unassisted as she collected a rebound and slipped the ball inside the left post.
Georgetown answered right back at 59:30 to regain the lead (2-1) as Holmes notched her second goal of the afternoon off a penalty corner. Thompson and Parsons were credited with assists, once again, as Holmes shot was direct from the top of the circle.
With time winding down, the Friars got an equalizer from freshman Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.) at 67:04. Michals cashed in for her second goal of the season off of a feed from junior Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.), who dribbled into the circle from the right side and fed Michals at the left post.
Michals' goal pushed the game into overtime, where another freshman, Sylvia Miller (Severn, Md.), stepped up to score the game winner. Miller collected a rebound and fired the game-winning goal into the back of the cage just 1:51 into extra time. It marked Miller's sixth goal of the season, and second game-winning goal of the year.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) recorded three saves for Providence in the victory. Georgetown's Rachel Skonecki collected 11 saves, while Katie Maransky contributed one defensive save.
The Friars return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 18 against cross-city rival Brown University. The game will be played at Brown on Goldberger Family Field and is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
