PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Villanova, 76-47, in BIG EAST action at Alumni Hall on Sunday, Jan. 31. Villanova shot 49-percent (29-for59) from the floor and 43-percent from three-point range (9-of-21) en route to its win.

Villanova (14-8, 7-4 BIG EAST) held a 17-3 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter, which included a 15-0 run over seven minutes before freshman Erica Meyer (Wilton, Conn.) broke the Friars' scoring drought with 37-seconds left in the stanza.

Providence (4-17, 0-11 BIG EAST) had another scoring drought in the second quarter that lasted a little over three minutes before sophomore Brianna Frias (Worcester, Mass.) and senior Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland) converted back-to-back lay-ins to bring the score to 26-10, Villanova. The Wildcats responded with a 12-0 run over three minutes of action en route to their 38-10 lead heading into the break. Megan Quinn paced Villanova in the first half of play with 16 points while Meyer had a team-high four for Providence.

Iiskola scored seven-straight points for Providence in the opening four minutes of the third quarter but the Wildcats continued their scoring attack as the period ended, 52-29. Providence had its largest offensive output in the quarter, and outscored Villanova 19-14.

Freshman Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter, shooting 3-for-4 from the floor and was 1-of-2 from three-point range.

Iiskola finished the game with a team-best 11 points, nine of them coaming in the second half. Meyer also reached double-figures with 10 points, which marked her career high. Junior Aliyah Miller (Southaven, Miss.) recorded a team-high six rebounds.

For Villanova, Quinn finished with 20 points and Alex Louin added 12 points and nine rebounds. Adrianna Hahn also posted double-digits with 10 points.

Overall, Providence shot 29-percent (19-for-65) from the floor and was 1-of-11 from beyond the arc.

The Friars next hit the road for a pair of games against Xavier on Friday, Feb. 5 and Butler on Sunday, Feb. 7. PC's match-up against Xavier is set to tip-off at 8:00 p.m. and will be nationally televised on FS1. The game vs. Butler will tip at 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). ​
