PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite out-shooting Fairfield, 15-8, and owning a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners, the Providence College field hockey team fell to the Stags, 4-2, on Sept. 27 in Providence, R.I.
At halftime, the two teams were tied up, 2-2. The Friars struck first as freshman Emma Lucas (Naarden, Netherlands) one-timed a pass from sophomore Abby Thornton (West Pittston, Pa.) at the 9:55 mark. Thornton was credited with the assist.
Fairfield jumped ahead, 2-1, with back-to-back goals from Ann Burgoyne (19:48) and Jaclyn Gallagher (20:55).
The Friars tied the game, 2-2, at the 26:02 mark as freshman Corinne Kenney (Warrington, Pa.) received a pass from the top of the circle and one-timed a blast over the goal line. Senior Salene Shaffer (Millerstown, Pa.) earned the assist on the play.
After the halftime break, Fairfield held the Friars scoreless while being out-shot, 8-3. Providence also held an 8-3 edge in corners during the second half. Offensively, the Stags made the most of their opportunities in front of the cage, scoring two unanswered goals to take the victory.
Jamie Appelberg found the back of the cage for Fairfield at 42:37, followed by Erin Buckley at 49:43.
Caitlin Bennett secured the win for Fairfield in goal with 10 saves. Megan Guilbert (Morganville, Pa.) took the loss for Providence after allowing three goals and making two saves. Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) entered the match at 24:30 and recorded one save, while allowing one goal.
The Friars return to action on Friday, Oct. 2 as they open BIG EAST Conference play against Georgetown. The match is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
