CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Harvard, 1-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 22 in Cambridge, Mass. The Friars improved to 7-3-0, while the Crimson moved to 2-6-1.

The win marks just the third time the Friars have defeated the Crimson in the 12 game series. The last time Providence defeated Harvard (2-1) was in 1990 in Providence, R.I.

The first half ended scoreless, with the Friars holding the advantage in shots (8-6), as well as corner kicks (3-2).

Providence got the first goal of the game in the 48th minute to make the game, 1-0. Freshman Casey Estey (Kensington, N.H.) netted the ball off a feed from senior Kathryn Hiller (Dartmouth, Mass.), for Estey's second goal of her career.

For the game, the Friars held the advantage in shots (14-13), as well as shots-on-goal (6-1). In net for the Friars, junior Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) registered one save for her third shutout this season. For the season, Shea has made 33 saves in 910 minutes of play and holds a 1.09 goals-against average. Harvard goalkeepers Lizzie Durack and Danielle Etzel split time in goal. Durack started the game spending the first 45 minutes in net and recorded three saves. Etzel started the second half and recorded two saves.

"It was a great win against a great program that is very well coached," head coach Sam Lopes said. "We started a bit slow, but once we found our rhythm after the first 10 minutes we played very well in many aspects. We have enjoyed a great run with a very demanding non-conference slate, but I believed in this group's talent and motivation. I'm proud of their performance to date but we have to remain humbled and keep growing with our season as we begin a challenging BIG EAST schedule."

The Friars, who ended their non-conference play with a 7-3 record, will kickoff their conference play with a home game versus Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Ray Treacy Track and Field Complex.
