Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing At Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, CONN. - The Providence College women's tennis team competed at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Sept. 18-20 in Hamden, Conn. Multiple players advanced to the third day of competition, and put forth several quality results. Ten different Friars competed in the event, and the team was represented in each of the four singles flights and two doubles flights. Other schools that competed in the tournament included UConn, URI, Fairfield, Sacred Heart, Fordham, Drexel, Quinnipiac and Seton Hall.

In the A-flight of singles competition, sophomore Nicole Cyterski dropped a tough opening round match-up (6-2, 7-5) to Drexel's Yazawa, who was an eventual semi-finalist in the flight.

The Friars' strongest singles showing of the weekend came on the part of senior captain Alana Prinos. Playing out of the tournament's A-flight, Prinos claimed two victories against formidable competition and advanced to the semifinals. In her first round contest, Prinos squeaked by Sarah Stuhlmann of Fairfield (6-0, 4-6, 10-8). In the ensuing quarterfinal round, the senior battled back from a 5-7, 1-3 deficit to defeat URI's Taylor Holden (5-7, 7-6 (6), 11-9). In the semifinal round, Prinos fell to Sato of Fordham, 6-2, 6-2.

In the tournament's B-flight, junior Jennifer DeLuca fell in her opening round match to UConn's Summer Walker (6-0, 7-5). Sophomore Emma Burgess grabbed a strong 7-5, 6-3 victory over Sadovnikova of URI in her B-flight play-in match before losing to Clary Rodriguez Cruz of Drexel (6-0, 6-2), who was the flight's eventual champion.

Junior Amanda Pitocco secured a 6-3, 6-1 victory over URI's Rucks in their first round match-up of C-flight play. Pitocco would go on to drop her quarterfinal match-up against Jacqueline Lazaro of UConn, the flight's eventual co-champion, 6-0, 6-3. Also in C-flight action, sophomore Brooke Burnside dropped her opening round match-up in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 10-7) to Quinnipiac's Mircea. However, Burnside rebounded from the early defeat to advance all the way to the finals of the C-flight's consolation bracket. In the first round of the consolation bracket, Burnside defeated Parla of Fairfield by a score of 8-1, The sophomore then cruised to an 8-3 victory over Grunin of Fordham. In the consolation bracket final, Burnside fell by a score of 9-8 (0) to Katie Kim of Seton Hall.

Three Friars advanced to the quarterfinals of the D-flight's singles tournament. Sophomore Katherine DeNucci cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Oates of Sacred Heart before dropping a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Perrotta of UConn. Freshman Kate Ryan scored a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Connors of Fairfield but fell by a score of 6-4, 6-1 to Coria of Drexel, the eventual co-champion of the flight. The Friars' other freshman Risa Takenaka sailed past Ruiz of Sacred Heart 6-2, 6-3 before losing 7-6 (0), 6-3 to Ryshena Providence of Drexel, who was the flight's other co-champion. Senior Hannah Zangari also represented the Friars in the D-flight, falling by a score of 6-3, 6-3 to Vargas of Uconn.

The Friars enjoyed another strong tournament of doubles play, with two teams advancing to the semifinal round of their respective flights.

In Flight A doubles play, the Friars' top pairing of Prinos and Burgess earned two victories en route to the semifinals. The duo began the weekend with a 6-4 victory over Holden and Sadovnilova of URI, and they continued their strong play with another 6-4 triumph over Strike and Kangwa of Seton Hall. Prinos and Burgess' run was halted in the semifinals by way of a 6-0 defeat to Drexel's Bowsher and Yazawa, the flight's eventual champions. DeLuca and Pitocco also competed in the A-flight, but they fell in their first-round match 6-3 to Quinnipiac's Horton and Lohaphaisan.

Cyterski and Zangari put forth a second-consecutive weekend of quality doubles in advancing to the B-flight's semifinals. The pairing cruised to a 6-2 win over Oates and Gurda of Sacred Heart, and they followed that effort up with a 7-5 victory over Grunin and Insogna of Fordham. In the semifinal round, Cyterski and Zangari would fall (7-5) in a tightly contested match against Winkler and Bunch of Drexel, the flight's eventual champion. Burnside and DeNucci dropped a 6-3 decision to Grunin and Insogna in their opening round match-up of B-flight competition, and Takenaka and Ryan were downed 6-3 by Mircea of Quinnipiac and White of Drexel.

The Friars will have three days of practice before traveling up to West Point, NY for the Army Invitational this upcoming weekend.
