PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Syracuse, 1-0, on Sunday, Aug. 23 at the Ray Treacy Track and Field Complex in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 2-0-0, while the Orange fell to 1-1-0.
The first 45 minutes of the game was scoreless between the Friars and the Orange. Senior Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.) had one of the best shots at goal in the first half. Zimmerman fired a shot just outside of the 6-yard box with 25:17 remaining, but Syracuse keeper, Courtney Brosnan, punched over the net.
Also in the first half, Providence junior goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) made back-to-back saves for Providence with 14 minutes remaining. The first came on a Syracuse direct kick at the top of the 18-yard box. Shea punched the ball directly over the net for the save.
With 12:57 minutes into the second half, senior Zimmerman found the back of the net off of a feed from sophomore Madison Doherty (Peabody, Mass.). It was Zimmerman's first goal of the season and Doherty's first assist.
The Friar defense held off the Orange for the entirety of the game, with the shutout going to Shea. Shea recorded four saves in her first shutout this season. Syracuse goalkeeper, Brosnan registered two saves for the Orange.
"It was a very important win for this team, considering the quick turnaround, against a talented Syracuse side that had an impressive win versus a very good UMass team," said Head Coach Sam Lopes. "We did many great things, but it's still early, so there is much to build on. College soccer is all about winning and learning and we were able to do both today. I love this team and their commitment to representing themselves, their families and our program. Great day in Friartown today."
The Friars will return to action at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27 for a home game against in-state rival, Bryant.
