SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Providence College women's tennis team fell in a pair of matches over the weekend, losing 7-0 against the Xavier Musketeers on Saturday, March 28 and falling in a tightly contested 4-3 match against the Seton Hall Pirates on Sunday, March 29. Both matches were played in Northern New Jersey.

The Musketeers proved why they are one of the top teams in the Big East Conference when they swept all seven points against the Friars. In doubles play, the Friars' No. 1 team of junior Alana Prinos and freshman Emma Burgess competed admirably but fell by a score of 8-6 against Xavier's Sydney Liggins and Amina Ismail. Providence College's No. 2 tandem of sophomores Jennifer DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco were defeated 8-1 by Lauren Ghidotti and Alex Brinker, while freshman Nicole Cyterski and junior Hannah Zangari were blanked 8-0 by the Musketeer's Daniella Patton and Christina Di Lorenzo.

In singles play, Cyterski was handled 6-1, 6-0 by Liggins out of 1st singles, and DeLuca fell by a 6-2, 6-2 margin to Ismail in their 3rd singles match. The Friars' Burgess dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Di Lorenzo in the duel for No. 4 singles, Pitocco was defeated 6-4, 6-1 by Ghidotti out of No. 5 singles, and Zangari lost in the No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-1 to Patton. Prinos engaged in the tightest match of the day as she nearly captured the first set, losing 7-6 (4) before also dropping the second set by a 6-4 margin. The loss snapped the Friars' three match winning streak and dropped them to 1-1 in Big East play.

After a difficult match against Xavier on Saturday, the Friars rebounded on Sunday with a gutsy effort against a strong Seton Hall team. One year after being shut out at home by the Pirates, the Friars nearly pulled out a win that would have snapped Seton Hall's eight match winning streak against Providence College.

The Friars began the contest by capturing the doubles point for the 7th time this spring, with the victories from the first and third positions. Cyterski and Zangari started the scoring for the Friars with a well-played 8-4 victory over Seton Hall's Marisa Quevedo and Isabell Klingert out of No. 3 doubles. Seton Hall would respond, as the Pirates' number two pairing of Katie Kim and Madison Shoemaker barely edged the Friars' DeLuca and Pitocco by a score of 8-7 (6). However, it was the Friars who would capture the decisive doubles match, with Burgess and Prinos earning a crucial 8-7, come from behind victory over Seton Hall's Julia Keenan and Hannah Liljekvist in the No. 1 doubles match.

However, Seton Hall would capture four of the six singles match en route to a narrow 4-3 victory for the home team. After battling an illness all weekend, Cyterski was forced to retire from her No. 1 singles match against Liljekvist while trailing 6-0, 1-0. Seton Hall gained a 2-1 lead with Luize Strike's 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 victory over the Friars' Prinos in the match for No. 2 singles. However, the Friars soon tied the score back up via a 6-3, 6-4 victory out of 4th singles by Burgess over Quevedo. Despite trailing 3-0 at the start of the second set, Burgess ripped off 6 of the next 7 games to clinch the straight sets victory and the Friars' second point of the day. The freshman has emerged as one of the Friars' most reliable singles players, as the victory marked her 4th win in the last 5 matches.

Seton Hall would respond, as Kim notched a 7-5, 6-3 win over Zangari in the battle for the No. 6 singles. Trailing 3-2, the Friars nearly salvaged the final two points of the day to steal what would have been an enormous road win over a tough Big East opponent. DeLuca tied the match score up with a clutch 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Keenan. After a difficult first set, the sophomore played one of her finest matches of the year, blowing Keenan off the court in sensational display of third-set tennis. With the score knotted up at 3, the fate of the match would come down to Pitocco. The Friars' sophomore played an excellent match against Klingert, who has won 15 of her last 16 singles matches, and captured the first set by a score of 6-3. The next two sets were a back and forth battle, but Klingert staved off Pitocco's best efforts, won the final two frames 4-6, 7-6 (2), and clinched the victory for Seton Hall. The losses dropped the Friars' overall record to 6-7 on the year and 1-2 in Big East Conference play. The team returns to action on April 11th against Depaul in Chicago.
