KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the visiting St. John's Red Storm on Saturday, April 18. The Red Storm (5-1 in conference play) squeezed out the doubles point before seizing victory in 5 of the 6 singles matches that were played. Sophomore Amanda Pitocco played one of her finest matches as a Friar and captured the lone point of the day for the team. Despite being played at the University of Rhode Island, the match marked the first home contest for the team since March 6th.
St. John's began the day by sweeping the doubles point against the Friars. Junior Hannah Zangari and freshman Nicole Cyterski dropped an 8-2 decision to Anastasia Polyakova and Stephanie Elgegren in the third doubles match, while the No. 1 doubles team of junior Alana Prinos and freshman Emma Burgess succumbed to Ana Morozova and Natalie Vavulina by an 8-4 margin. In the second doubles match, sophomores Jennifer DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Zofia Stanisz and Jaide Collins but would eventually lose the eight-game pro-set in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7).
Injuries to DeLuca and Zangari forced the Friars to lean on a different singles lineup than they had utilized in a majority of their matches this spring. Polyakova beat Cyterski 6-1, 6-1 in the 2nd singles match, while Elgegren sailed by Burgess 6-3, 6-1 out of the 3rd position. St. John's Collins captured the 5th singles match 6-1, 6-1 over Friar senior Karen Ramirez, while the Red Storm's Irina Preotescu handled junior Olivia Hogan 6-2, 6-3 in the 6th singles match. Prinos once again put together a strong performance out of the 1st singles position, but she was bested in a third set superbreaker by Morozova, 6-2, 2-6, 10-7. The Friars broke through and gained their sole point of the day when Pitocco stepped into the 4th singles slot and gained a quality 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory over Stanisz. Due to DeLuca's absence, Pitocco was forced to play one position higher than usual; however, that did not stop the sophomore from picking up an impressive victory. Behind strong and consistent groundstrokes, Pitocco overcame the wind and a difficult first set to put the Friars on the board. The victory continued the Rhode Island native's strong play at home this season, as she improved to 5-1 in singles matches in the Ocean State.
The Friars continue their homestand with the last regular season match of the year tomorrow, Sunday, April 19 against the Villanova Wildcats. The match will begin at 11 a.m. and it will be played at the University of Rhode Island.
GO FRIARS!
