CHICAGO, ILL. - The Providence College women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches this weekend, falling 7-0 on Saturday, April 11 to #33 DePaul University and 5-2 on Sunday, April 12 to Butler University. Both matches were played in Chicago, Ill.
The Friars began the weekend with a tough loss to DePaul, one of the top teams in the nation. The Friars were swept in doubles play to start the match. Junior Alana Prinos and freshman Emma Burgess fell 8-0 out of No. 1 doubles to Yuliya Shupenia and Ana Vladutu, and sophomores Jenn DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco dropped an 8-2 decision to Patricia Fargas and Rebeca Mitrea in the No. 2 doubles match. Junior Hannah Zangari and freshman Nicole Cyterski rounded out doubles play with an 8-2 loss in No. 3 doubles to Zaina Sufi and Jarret Fisher.
The Blue Demons captured all six singles matches to finish off the sweep of the Friars. Cyterski fell to Shupenia 6-0, 6-1 in her No. 1 singles match, while DeLuca was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Vladutu out of 3rd singles. Burgess dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Fargas, and Mitrea defeated Pitocco by a 6-1, 6-2 margin in 5th singles. In the battle for the No. 6 singles spot, Fisher got the best of Zangari by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Junior Alana Prinos continued her strong play out of No. 2 singles, as she won the first set over Patricia Lancranjan in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). However, Lancranjan battled back to take the second set 7-5, and she was able to handle Prinos 10-3 in the superbreaker that would decide the third set.
On Sunday, April 12, the Friars would come up short against the Bulldogs in a tightly contested 5-2 match. Butler gained an early advantage over the Friars by capturing the doubles point. DeLuca and Pitocco fell to Butler's Grace Hyde and Bailey Padgett by a score of 8-3 out of No. 2 doubles, but Prinos and Burgess rebounded from their loss to DePaul by beating Kylie Haviland and Konstantina Adami 8-7 in No. 1 doubles. However, the Bulldogs would grab the rubber match, as Zangari and Cyterski fell 8-6 to Angelina Qin and Michelle McFerran out of the 3rd doubles position.
Already holding a 1-0 lead, the Bulldogs won four of the six singles matches to hold off the Friars. Padgett cruised by Cyterski 6-1, 6-1 out of No. 2 singles, and Adami quickly followed that effort with a 6-1, 6-2 win over DeLuca in the No. 3 singles match. PC would counter as Burgess scored a quality 6-3, 6-4 win over Qin in the battle for No. 4 singles. The win was the Friar freshman's sixth victory of the spring campaign, and it gave the Friars their first point of the day. Due to an injury to Zangari, junior Olivia Hogan stepped into the 6th singles spot but was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by McFerran to give the Bulldogs their fourth point of the day. In the 5th singles match, Pitocco played a terrific first set, winning the frame 6-2 over Rachel Sutton. However, the Bulldog would bounce back, capturing the second set 6-3 and finishing off the Friar sophomore in a third set superbreaker, 10-6. In the last match of the day, Prinos continued her strong play over the weekend, earning a hard fought 7-5, 7-6 (3) victory over Haviland out of 1st singles. With the win, the junior improved to 6-6 in the spring season and gave the Friars their 2nd point of the day.
The losses to DePaul and Butler dropped the Friars record to 7-9 on the year and 1-4 in Big East conference play. The team will look to get back on track this upcoming weekend, as they take on St. John's on Saturday, April 18 and Villanova on Sunday, April 19. Both matches will be played at the University of Rhode Island.
