PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 25th-ranked Providence College men's basketball team defeated Marquette, 77-66, on Sunday, March 1 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Friars improved to 20-9 (BIG EAST 10-6), while Marquette moved to 11-17 (BIG EAST 3-13). The victory gave the Friars their 20th win for the season and marked the first time the Friars have recorded consecutive 20-win seasons since the 1992-93 (20-13) and 1993-94 (20-10) campaigns. Last season, Providence finished with a 23-12 mark.

Senior forward LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) recorded his 1,000th career-rebound in the game as he finished with game highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds. Henton is trying to become just the second player all-time at Providence to score 2,000 or more points and register 1,000 or more rebounds. Henton has recorded 1,983 points and has grabbed 1,012 rebounds in 130 games.

In addition to Henton, who had his fifth double-double of the season, the Friars also were led by sophomore guard Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.) with 16 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and four steals.

The first half ended with the Friars leading by 11, 40-29. For the Friars, junior forward Tyler Harris (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led the team in the first half with 11 points, followed by Henton with nine.

The second half started with a 14-point run from Providence, while holding Marquette to just one point in the six minutes into the half. With 14:08 left in the game the Friars held a 24 point lead, 54-30. Henton scored eight of the 14 points in the run. However, Marquette's Duane Wilson heated up from behind the arc, finishing the game with seven threes and got the Golden Eagles back in the game.

With 1:59 left in the game, MU's Matt Carlino made the team's 10th three of the contest to get the Golden Eagles within five points (71-66). The Friar defense stepped up over the final two minutes and did not allow MU to score again.

The game saw five lead changes and four ties all in the first half as the Friars held the lead for the entirety of the second half. The Friars held the advantage in points from the paint (44-26), and second chance points (18-0). For the game, the Friars went 29-of-64 from the field, while Marquette went 25-of-56, both shooting 45 percent.

For the second straight game, the Friars were without the services of senior center Carson Desrosiers (Windham, N.H.), who was out with an injured leg.

The Friars will return to action at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4 when they travel to Seton Hall for their final road game of the regular season.
