SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Providence College women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to a strong University of Albany team on Sunday, February 1 in Schenectady, NY.
The Friars began the match against the Danes with a competitive series of doubles matches. The Friars' top pairing of freshman Emma Burgess and junior Alana Prinos was able to claim a 7-6 victory in their match against Albany's Kirsten Scott and Chassidy King. This victory gave the Friars their first point in doubles play. However, the Danes were able to salvage the last two doubles matches, as sophomores Jennifer DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco fell 6-4 to Cheryl Kukkonen and Alba Sala in the battle for second doubles, and junior Hannah Zangari and freshman Nicole Cyterski lost the third doubles match to Dajana Ogujenovic and Averie Bowen by a 6-4 margin.
In singles play, Ogujenovic was able to best PC's Cyterski by a score of 6-1, 7-6 (5) out of the 1st singles position. However, the Friars were able to rebound quickly, as Prinos's strong, consistent play allowed her to record a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Kukkonen in the 2nd singles match. In the contest for 3rd singles, Providence's DeLuca fell 6-0, 6-3 to Albany's Scott, while the Friars' Olivia Hogan was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Albany's Sala in the no. 4 singles. The Danes wrapped up their win over the Friars with King's 7-5, 6-4 win over Burgess in the 5th singles match. However in the 6th singles match, Zangari captured an impressive come-from-behind 6-7, 6-3, 10 (5) victory over Albany's Chae Bean Kang, giving the Friars their second point of the match.
