Kate Friesen - The Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated by the University of Maine on Oct. 30 in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears scored a late goal to force the game into overtime and scored again 3:05 minutes into the extra session to secure the win. The Friars fall to 0-7-0 overall (0-3-0 Hockey East), while the Black Bears improve to 5-4-0 (3-2-0 Hockey East).

Madison Myers started in goal for the Friars, and made eight saves in the first period and three in the second. She finished with a total of 16 saves in the game and did not allow a goal until 1:11 left in regulation.

After a scoreless first and second period, junior forward Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Kendra Goodrich (Apple Valley, Minn.) at the 10:24 mark of the third period.

The Friars held their lead until 1:11 remaining in regulation. Maine pulled their goalie, Meghann Treacy, with just over two minutes left in the game. With an extra-man advantage, the Black Bears tied the game, 1-1, and forced overtime.

The Friars began the overtime with 1:54 left on a Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ont.) tripping penalty. The Friars killed the penalty but could not hold out for the tie. Maine's Alyson Matteau scored the game winning-goal for Maine.

The Friars are back in action for a home match up against Hockey East rival University of New Hampshire at 2:00 p.m. on Nov. 7, at Schneider Arena.
