PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's volleyball team was defeated, 3-1, by Villanova on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars fell to 10-11 overall (1-6 BIG EAST) and Villanova improved to 17-4 (7-1 BIG EAST).
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the match as they won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-12. However, the Friars came to life in the third set and earned a 25-12 win. In the third set, the Friars were paced by junior Marina Rose (Coventry, Conn.) with four kills. Junior Kayla Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) also added three kills for the Friars. Junior Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) contributed with five digs.
The lead went back and forth in the fourth set with the Friars battling for every point. The Friars held a 24-23 lead, but the Wildcats won the final three points to earn a 26-24 win in the fourth set and a 3-1 victory in the match. Johnson and Rose each had five kills in the set, while freshman Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) had four kills.
Villanova's Allie Loitz had a match-high 15 kills. Rose recorded 14 kills and Johnson finished with 10 for the Friars. Cruz and Rose each registered 12 digs.
The Friars will return to action. on Oct. 16 at Marquette at 8 p.m.
