PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed up their home schedule by sweeping the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Providence, R.I. The men's team defeated Holy Cross 153-145, while the women won 190-105.
On the women's side, sophomore Helen Smith (Belmont, Mass.) led the team with three first-place finishes in the 400m freestyle (4:46.05), 800m freestyle (9:41.55), and 200m butterfly (2:31.35). Junior Reilly O'Connell (West Barnstable, Mass.), senior Kelly O'Neill (Rye, N.Y.), and senior Leia Federiconi (Williamsville, N.Y.) all contributed to the win with two individual first-place finishes. O'Connell took first in the 100m freestyle (1:01.03) and the 200m freestyle (2:12.84), while O'Neill won the 100m backstroke (1:09.07) and the 200m backstroke (2:29.96) events. Federiconi claimed first in the 200m breaststroke (2:51.97) and the 100m breaststroke (1:14.20). The team also took first and second place in the 200m medley relay. O'Neill, Federiconi, freshman Abigail Belisle Haley (Yarmouth, Maine), and O'Connell made up the relay team which came in first with a time of 2:03.89. The relay team coming in second consisted of senior Moira James (Olney, Md.), freshman Megan Collins (Trumbull, Conn.), senior Meredith Pramer (Norwalk, Conn.), and sophomore Angela Caputo (Longmeadow, Mass.), touching the wall in 2:09.51.
On the men's side, senior John Fatigati (Mahwah, N.J.) earned three first-place finishes in the 100m backstroke (59.78), 200m backstroke (2:12.43), and 200m IM (2:10.15). Senior Justin Tse (Framingham, Mass.) finished first in the 400m freestyle (4:20.09), and second in both the 200m freestyle (1:58.60) and the 100m freestyle (54.02). Sophomore Zachary Begnaud (Natchitoches, La.) took first in the 800m freestyle (9:11.40), second in the 400m freestyle (4:20.48), and third in the 200m butterfly (2:25.40). Freshman Connor Fabian (LaGrange Park, Ill.) finished first in the 200m breaststroke (2:30.80), second in the 100m breaststroke (1:08.15), and third in the 200m IM (2:18.27). To decide the match in the final event, sophomore Michael Martinico (Nesconset, N.Y.), sophomore Jonathan Mariner (Marion, Mass.), Begnaud, and Tse took first in the 400m freestyle relay (3:41.45), outreaching Holy Cross's second place finish by more than five seconds.
The Friars next meet will take place in Piscataway, N.J. when they compete against Georgetown on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10:00 a.m.
