Freshmen Shine At Quinnipiac Invitational Fall Season Opener

HAMDEN, CONN. - The Providence College women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the three-day Quinnipiac Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 14. The members of the freshmen class saw success at their career opener, going 6-0 on the first day of competition (Sept. 12).
The Friars began the invitational with doubles play, where teams in both A and B flights earned a spot in the semifinals play. Junior Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) and freshman Nicole Cyterski (Pittsburg, Pa.) earned a 2-1 record in flight A with a win over Seton Hall (8-4) and Connecticut (8-6). The duo lost in the semifinals against Quinnipiac (8-3).
In flight B, senior Karen Ramirez (San Juan, P.R.) and freshman Brooke Burnside (Salt Lake City, Utah), also earned a 2-1 record, winning matches against Connecticut (8-7 (3)) and Quinnipiac (8-1), but falling to Army (8-5) in the semifinals.
In singles play, Cyterski went 2-1 in the A flight. She earned two victories over Seton Hall players DeRienzo (7-6 (3), 6-1) and Liljekvist (7-6 (3), 5-7, 10-5) but fell to Alderman from Connecticut in the semifinals (6-1, 6-1). Competing in the B flight, freshman Emma Burgess (Huntsville, Ala.) won her opening match against Weinberg of Connecticut (3-6, 6-4, 10-5) but was defeated by Kim of Seton Hall in the quarterfinals (2-6, 6-4, 10-2).
In the C flight, both freshman Katerine DeNucci (Glastonbury, Conn.) and sophomore Amanda Pitocco (Warwick, R.I.) made it to the quarterfinals by defeating Launie from Quinnipiac (6-4, 6-0) and Schaar from Hartford (6-4, 6-4) respectively. DeNucci fell in the semifinals to Kennan from Seton Hall (6-2, 6-2), while Pitocco lost to Flanagan of Connecticut (6-1, 6-3).
In the D flight, freshmen Brooke Burnside (Salt Lake City, Utah), Katie Marvin (Potomac, Md.), and Grace Biciunas (Norwell, Mass.) each won their opening match. Due to an illness, Marvin did not continue on to the second day of tournament play and she was replaced by Ramirez. Burnside continued on to win matches against Connecticut (6-2, 6-3) and Army (6-2, 7-5) to earn a place in the finals. Rameriz also made her way to the finals by defeating Pezzullo and Klingert from Seton Hall. With two finalists from Providence in the D flight, the final match was not played.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, Sept. 19 through Sunday, Sept. 21 when Providence will compete in the Brown Invitational set to be held in Providence, R.I.
