PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team lost to BIG EAST foe St. John's, 68-52, on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. With the win St. John's improves to 11-1 on the season and 2-0 in the BIG EAST, while Providence moves to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Friars held a 26-23 lead over the Red Storm at halftime. Sophomore Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) powered Providence with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, four rebounds and three steals. Senior Tori Rule (Minneapolis, Minn.) and senior Chanise Baldwin (Pontiac, Mich.) added four points each. For the half, the Friars held the advantage in rebounds (19-15) and points in the paint (18-8). Providence held the lead in the half for 16 minutes while shooting 42-percent from the floor (11-for-26).

Providence used an 8-0 run starting at 16:04 of the second half to gain a 42-31 lead - its largest of the game. The Red Storm climbed back with a 13-2 run to tie the game at 44 with 8:13 remaining. St. John's later took a 48-46 lead (5:57), and kept adding to it en route to its 68-52 win. The Red Storm shot an impressive 51-percent (27-for-63) in the closing half while Providence shot 31-percent (9-for-29). St. John's also pulled down 30 rebounds in the second stanza compared to Providence's 11.

For the game, Beal finished with a team-high 17 points while Rule added 11. Senior Alexis Harris (Detroit, Mich.) and Baldwin both gathered a team-best six rebounds in the contest.

Danaejah Grant led the Red Storm with a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Aliyyah Handford contributed 21 points.

Freshman Alison Lewis (Kennett Square, Pa.) scored the first points of her career in the second half on two free throws.

With today's point total, Rule passed Monika Roberts `01 on the Providence's all-time scoring list, moving into 20th on the list. The senior now has 1,136 career points in a Friars uniform.

Providence will next play in back-to-back road BIG EAST contests at Butler and Xavier. The Friars square off against Butler on Friday, Jan. 2 for a 2:00 p.m. game. Providence remains on the road to face Xavier on Sunday, Jan. 4 for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
