The No. 10/23 Providence College men's soccer team tied No. 15/20 Marquette, 1-1, on Wednesday, Oct. 22. With the tie, the Friars move to 8-2-2 (3-0-2 BIG EAST) on the season, while the Golden Eagles move to 7-3-3 (1-1-3 BIG EAST).
The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute of the game. Sophomore Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) intercepted a Marquette pass, dribbled the ball 20 yards and blasted the ball inside the left post. The goal was unassisted and it marked Gressel's third goal of the season.
At the half, the Friars led 1-0 with a 7-1 advantage in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Marquette responded to Gressel's goal with the equalizer in the 63rd minute of the game. Jake Taylor shot the ball from the left side to the inside post to make the game 1-1.
After 110 minutes of play, the score remained 1-1, ending the game in a draw. Providence out-shot Marquette 13-11.
In net for the Friars, red-shirt senior goalkeeper Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.) made three saves, while Marquette's Charlie Lyon registered five.
The Friars are back in action at 1:00 p.m. for another road game at Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 25.
