Oct. 12, 2014 EAST HARTFORD, CONN. - The Providence College women's tennis team fell 7-0 to the University of Connecticut in a match that was more tightly contested than the final score indicates. Originally scheduled to be played at Providence College, the match was relocated to the East Hartford Racquet Club in Connecticut due to inclement weather in the Providence area.
Match play began with three doubles matches to decide the overall doubles point. Junior
Alana Prinos and freshman
Katie Marvin teamed up at the top doubles position, but they were defeated by the Huskies doubles team of Maxene Weinberg and Srna Stosljevic (8-2). In the No. 2 position, sophomores
Jennifer DeLuca and
Amanda Pitocco fell by a score of 8-3 to the Huskies tandem of Zaina Zaki and Emma Alderman. The loss snapped DeLuca and Pitocco's five-match doubles winning streak in team competitions, a streak that dated back to the 2014 spring season. In the No. 3 doubles spot, junior
Olivia Hogan and freshman
Grace Biciunas fell to the Huskies duo of Summer Walker and Shea Flanagan. After winning all three doubles matches, UConn grabbed the first point of the day and gained an early advantage.
The teams then moved on to singles play. In one of the closest matches of the day, Prinos lost a very tight first set to Stosljevic by a score of 5-7 and then proceeded to drop the second set 2-6. "I actually felt as though we played well today," stated Prinos after the match. "Each match was far closer than the score let on, but they are a very tough team. In fact, I think we competed particularly well considering the injuries that we are dealing with as a team. Facing great competition like UConn is a very good experience for our team, and it should really help to prepare us for the match against Bowdoin on Monday."
In the No. 2 singles position, DeLuca controlled play during portions of the first set but fell to Alderman (3-6, 0-6). Hogan dropped a 3-6, 1-6 decision to Weinberg out of the No. 3 position, and freshman
Emma Burgess lost to Zaki (0-6, 4-6). In the No. 6 slot, Marvin suffered a 2-6, 0-6 defeat to Flanagan.
Perhaps the tightest match of the day was Pitocco's loss to Walker. After dropping the first set 1-6, the sophomore rebounded and nearly forced a third set, losing the second set in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (5). "In the second set, my ground strokes were more consistent," noted Pitocco after the match. "I was attacking her weakness, and I won a lot of points with my volleys which was important. Compared to the first set, I think I played a more aggressive and consistent game."
The Friars will have to regroup quickly, as another quality opponent, the Bowdoin Polar Bears, will be in town Monday for the final dual match of Providence's fall season. When asked about Monday's opponent, Pitocco stressed how important it would be for the team to move on quickly from Saturday's defeat. "Bowdoin is going to be another strong team," she added. "We need to come out confident, play to our strengths, and make the proper in-match adjustments in order to win. It's going to be a fun match, and we're looking forward to it."
GO FRIARS!
