Oct. 14, 2014 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team concluded its fall season with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Bowdoin Polar Bears. The Friars showed a great deal of grit and resolve by winning against a quality opponent in a match that featured several momentum swings.

In doubles action, the Friars' No. 1 team of junior Alana Prinos and freshman Katie Marvin fell to Bowdoin's No. 1 pairing of Tess Trinka and Pilar Giffenig by a score of 8-1. In the second doubles match, the Friars' team of sophomores Jenn DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco were defeated 8-5 by Emma Chow and Sam Stalder of the Polar Bears.

In No. 3 doubles, junior Olivia Hogan and freshman Emma Burgess salvaged the final doubles match of the day by knocking off the Bowdoin team of Kyla Silitch and Lory Alini by a score of 8-5. Hogan and Burgess led from start to finish, capitalizing on Hogan's powerful backhand and Burgess's skilled all-court game. However, the Polar Bear's two wins gave them the overall doubles point and a 1-0 lead.

The first completed singles match of the day came out of No. 4 singles, as freshman Emma Burgess capped off an impressive fall season with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Alini. Burgess utilized her skilled groundstrokes and brilliant touch to keep Alini off balance throughout the match. "I felt like I could not miss out there today," Burgess commented after the match. "I had total command of my drop shots and lobs, and everything felt great. This was an ideal way to end the fall tennis season. I feel as though I'm playing the best tennis of my life right now, and I cannot wait for the Spring season to start."

Shortly after, Marvin won the No. 6 singles match (6-2, 6-1) over Tanisha Francis in convincing fashion. Marvin's penetrating groundstrokes served as the difference maker in the match, as she controlled the baseline rallies and forced Francis into numerous errors.

Bowdoin quickly answered the Friars' hot start with two singles victories of their own. In the No. 3 singles match, Giffenig defeated Hogan 6-1, 6-4 to give the Polar Bears their second point of the day. That match was followed by Trinka's 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Prinos in the No. 1 spot. The Polar Bears held a 3-2 lead over the Friars after Trinka's victory, and needed only one more point to wrap up a win over the Friars in the best-of-7 match format.

However, the Friars' sophomores Pitocco and DeLuca each scored clutch victories to complete a come from behind victory for the team. Pitocco overcame Chow's unconventional style of play to hold on for a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win in No. 5 singles. The sophomore countered Chow's sliced groundstrokes with strong topspin approach shots and timely net play to provide the Friars with their third point of the day.

The final point would come down to the battle between DeLuca and Stalder at No. 2 singles. DeLuca cruised to a 6-3 victory in the first set behind her devastating forehand, but dropped the second set 3-6 as Stalder played a more consistent brand of tennis. In the third set, the Friars' sophomore regained her previous form and triumphed by a score of 6-4 to seal the match victory for the team. "I felt like I had great command of my forehand for the majority of the match, and I was able to move her around the court the way I wanted to," DeLuca said after the win. "Obviously, it can be difficult to regroup after losing the second set, but I was pleased with the way that I played aggressive tennis in the third [set]. There is a bit of additional pressure when you know that the fate of the match rests on your shoulders, but I trusted my strokes and it felt good to give the team a victory in our last match of the fall."

The Friars concluded the fall portion of their season with a 3-1 record in team dual matches. Prinos will represent the team in singles competition next weekend at the ITA Regional Championships in New Haven, Connecticut, while DeLuca and Pitocco will play in the tournament's doubles draw. After the three Friars wrap up next weekend's play, the team will turn its attention to the 2015 spring season.
