Women's Tennis Sweeps Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated Holy Cross, 7-0, Sunday, Sept. 28 in Worcester, Mass. With the win, the Friars move their overall record to 1-1 on the season.

Competing for the Friars in singles play were sophomores Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.), Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) and Olivia Hogan (Gaithersberg, Md.), senior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), junior Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and freshman Jennifer DeLuca(Riverside, Conn.).

Bernardez earned a win in the No. 1 singles position against Virginia Peck-Philips (6-2, 7-5). In the No. 2 position, Prinos defeated Jaclyn Carroll (6-3, 6-1). DeLuca toppled Maya Welch (6-1, 6-1) in the No. 3 position.

Ramirez took down Marielle Newell (6-1, 6-0) in the No. 4 position, while Zangari earned a win against Cassy Deng (6-2, 6-1) in the No. 5 position. Hogan defeated Abby Henry (6-2, 6-1) in the No. 6 position to give the Friars a clean sweep in singles play.

In doubles play, Bernardez and Zangari defeated Peck-Philips and Carroll (8-3) in the No. 1 position. DeLuca and Prinos competed at the No. 2 position, where the two defeated Welch and Newell (8-2). Freshman Amanda Pitocco (Warwick, R.I.) and Ramirez toppled Deng and Henry (8-1) to finish the clean sweep.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 6, when Providence will travel to West Hartford, Conn. to take on Hartford for a 1:00 p.m. match.
