Women's Tennis Wraps Up Play At Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Providence College women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the three day Quinnipiac Invitational today, Sunday, Sept. 15. The Friars saw a 3-0 run in the flight B doubles on Friday, Sept. 13 to kick off the invitational.
On Friday, Sept. 13, the Friars started the invitational with doubles play. Senior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and sophomore Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) earned an 1-1 record in flight A with a win over Sacred Heart (8-1). The pair fell to Connecticut (8-3) in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) and freshman Jennifer DeLuca (Riverside, Conn.) also competed in flight A, earning an 0-1 record with a loss to Seton Hall (8-4).
Competing in flight B was junior Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Olivia Hogan (Gaithersburg, Md.). The pair earned an 2-1 record, suffering an 8-5 loss to Hartford in the quarterfinals. The two earned wins over Seton Hall (9-7) and Navy (9-7).
Junior Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) and freshman Amanda Pitocco (Warwick, R.I.) earned a record of 3-0 on Friday to land them a spot in the finals. The duo earned wins against Hartford (8-1), Connecticut (8-6), and Seton Hall (8-4) before falling to Quinnipiac (8-2) in the finals on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The Friars concluded the tournament with singles play. On Saturday, the Friars saw Prinos reach the semifinals with wins over Navy (6-4, 6-3) and Army (6-2, 6-0), before falling to Connecticut (6-2, 6-0) on Sunday in the flight A division. Also competing in the A flight was Bernardez who tallied a 1-1 record with a comeback win over Connecticut (0-6, 6-1, 10-5) before falling to Quinnipiac (3-6, 6-3, 15-13) in the quarterfinals.
In flight B the Friars saw two competitors reach the semifinals in their respective brackets. Ramirez earned a 2-1 record with wins against Army (6-2, 6-2) and Quinnipiac (6-3, 6-2). Ramirez fell to Connecticut (4-6, 6-2, 12-10) in a hard fought semifinal match on the final day of competition. DeLuca also fell in the semifinals of the B flight after taking down competitors from Northeastern (6-1, 6-1) and Connecticut (5-7, 6-4, 10-8). DeLuca fell to Seton Hall (6-4, 6-1).
Corder notched a record of 1-1 in flight C with a win over Army (6-4, 6-1) and a loss to Quinnipiac (6-3, 6-4). Zangari also competed in the C flight but was knocked out in the first round in a tough match against Sacred Heart University (6-4, 4-6, 12-10).
Providence saw Hogan reach the semifinals of flight D, while Pitocco earned a spot in the finals. Hogan tallied a 2-1 record with wins against Quinnipiac (6-1, 6-1) and Connecticut (6-1, 6-3) before falling in a tough fought match with Army (1-6, 7-6[5], 10-5). Pitocco earned a 3-1 record after collecting two wins on Saturday and a win on Sunday. The freshman earned wins against Connecticut (6-3, 1-6, 10-2), Quinnipiac (6-4, 6-1) and Army (0-6, 6-1, 10-4) before falling to an competitor of the Army (6-1, 6-4) squad on Sunday.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22 when Providence will compete in the Brown Invitational set to be held in Providence, R.I.
