CHICAGO -The Providence College volleyball team dropped its season opener to DePaul, 3-0, on Friday night in the opening round of the DePaul Invitational. The Friars were defeated in the first set, 25-19, before falling 25-14 and 25-22.
The match was the Friars' first of three at the tournament.
In the first set, PC played back-and-forth with the Blue Demons but was edged out, 25-19. Providence pulled within two (17-15) but DePaul went on to score eight of the next 12 points to take the set.
DePaul led comfortably in the second set, taking control early on. A kill by junior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) got the Friars within four (11-7) midway through the set, but the Blue Demons rallied and scored 14 of the next 21 points to take a 2-0 lead.
Providence led, 19-18, late in the third set but DePaul used a 7-3 run to close things out (25-22) and take the match by a score of 3-0.
Overall, Ziegler led the Friars with nine kills to go along with seven digs. Freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) recorded a team-best 14 digs while sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) added 26 assists on the night.
DePaul was led by Natalie Rizzo and Vesela Zapryanova, who recorded eight kills apiece. Zapraynova also led the Blue Demons with eight digs. Colleen Smith had a game-best 27 assists.
PC concludes play at the DePaul Invitational on Saturday with a pair of matches against McNeese State (11 a.m. ET) and Chicago State (5:30 p.m. ET).
