Women's Tennis Defeats Grand Valley State University, 5-2

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated the Grand Valley State Lakers, 5-2, on Tuesday, March 5. It was the second win for the Friars on their spring break tournament in Florida. The win brings the Friars overall record to 9-1 and 5-1 in spring play.

Sophomore Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and freshman Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) defeated Morgan Carney and Niki Shipman (8-2) at the No. 3 doubles position to put the Friars in a strong position to take the doubles point. Senior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and junior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) took down Lexi Rice and Katelyn Schaffer (8-4) at the No. 1 position to clinch the doubles point for the Friars. Freshman Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) were defeated by Allison Fecko and Leah Dancz (8-6).

Aviles-Duron and Bernardez got the Friars out to a strong start on Tuesday with wins in the No. 1 and 2 singles positions, respectively. Aviles-Duron knocked off Shipman (6-1, 6-2), while Bernardez defeated Dancz (6-1, 6-1).

Sophomore Caitlin Foley (Holden, Mass.) clinched the win for the Friars. Foley defeated Fecko at the No. 6 position (6-3, 6-3) to earn her first win in the No. 6 position this season.

Prinos and freshman Olivia Hogan (Gaithersburg, Md.) were both defeated in their respective singles positions. Prinos dropped a close fought match to Rice (4-6, 7-5, 10-5) at the No. 3 position, while Hogan fell at No. 4 singles to Carney (6-2, 7-5).

Ramirez rounded out singles play for the Friars with a win at the No. 5 position. Ramirez came back to defeat Schaffer after dropping the first set (5-7, 6-1, 6-1).

The Friars will travel to Scared Heart on March 15 for a 3:00 p.m. match with the Pioneers.
