Women's Tennis Defeats NYIT, 4-3

East Providence, R.I.- - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated New York Institute of Technology 4-3 on Sunday, Feb. 24. With the win the Friars move their overall record to 7-1 and their spring record to 3-1.

The Friars took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Freshman Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) competed at No. 2 doubles, where the pair toppled Sara Burinato and Rocio Benavent, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles was sophomore Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and freshman Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.), who defeated Gabriela Rodriguez and Valeria Savina, 8-6. Senior Marisela Aviles-Duron and junior Maria Bernardez fell to Nelly Ciolkowski and Madalina Florea at the No. 1 doubles position (8-3).

Aviles-Duron lost for only the second time this season at the No. 1 singles position, when she fell to Ciolkowski (6-0, 6-1). Bernardez also suffered a loss in singles play at the No. 2 position. Burinato defeated Bernardez 6-4 and 6-3. Prinos fell to Florea at the No. 3 singles position in a close fought battle (2-6, 6-2 and 7-6(3)).

Corder, Ramirez and Zangari combined to finish strong for the Friars. Corder defeated Benavent at No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-4). Ramirez competed at the No. 5 position, where she topped Savina (6-4, 6-2). Zangari rounded out the play for the Friars with a win at the No. 6 position over Rodriguez (7-5, 6-4).

The Friars are back in action Monday, March 4 when they travel to Orlando, Fla. for a tournament. On Monday the Friars will face Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, the time of the match has not yet been determined.
